Forty-eight drawings fall into this period. Exactly half of them are by French artists; thirteen are by Italian, seven by British and seven by Dutch artists. One drawing is by a Swiss artist and one by a Turkish artist.
The majority, with some notable exceptions, are preparatory drawings rather than completed, final works of art. Executed in a broad variety of media, they were added to the Chazen collection in the early years of the museum's history to exemplify the dexterity of hand that the old masters brought to their craft.
Among the artists represented are Nicholas Lancret, Jean-Baptiste Oudry, Jean-Baptiste Greuze, Adamo Scultori, and Giovanni Battista Tiepolo. Recently, the museum has been developing a collection of British drawings and watercolors. Among these acquisitions are very fine works by Paul Sandby and Samuel Heironymous Grimm.
