Tandem Press will celebrate its 25-year anniversary this December with an exhibition at the Chazen Museum of Art. The UW-affiliated press is an artistic laboratory where internationally recognized artists can experiment creatively, make editions of prints, and interact with students. The press has printed hundreds of art editions and this exhibition will highlight the work of more than a dozen artists, including Judy Pfaff, Suzanne Caporael, Robert Cottingham, Nicola López, and Sean Scully.
Tandem Press was founded in the fall of 1987 by art professor William Weege, who was convinced that working in a viable printing and publishing workshop would be invaluable experience for students. While Tandem would serve the educational mission of the university, it also had to be a professional operation that would attract working artists. Over the past 25 years more than 300 students have worked at the Press and 63 artists have been in residence. The Press is respected for its cutting edge and innovative achievements in printmaking and also for the quality of the renowned painters, sculptors, and printmakers who have been in residence. Tandem prints are in museum collections throughout the United States and have been exhibited nationally and internationally.
Generous support for this exhibition has been provided by the Chazen Museum of Art Council and the Wisconsin Arts Board with funds from the State of Wisconsin and the National Endowment for the Arts.
A full-color illustrated catalogue will be published, with essays by Faye Hirsch, Art Hove, and Paula Panczenko.
