Essay by Kelly Grovier
Sean Scully is one of the most significant and influential abstract painters working today. The beauty of Moroccan robes, rugs, and tents made a deep impression early in his career and Scully has become best known for large-scale paintings of lines, stripes, and blocks of color. When the Chazen Museum of Art expansion opened in October 2011, Scully's monumental paintings, including some new works, and a selection of watercolors from the artist’s personal collection inaugurated the new temporary exhibition galleries.
The full-color exhibition catalogue Sean Scully Paintings and Watercolors includes full-color reproductions of all works in the exhibition. It also features an essay by the noted poet, historian, and art critic Kelly Grovier, University of Wales, Aberystwyth.
